In February 2006 the Cuban Classical Ballet of Miami was launched at the historic Gusman Center for the Performing Arts in Downtown Miami. The performance was a sold out success; the spectacular dancing brought down the house and the media gave it rave reviews. “If anything defines the Cuban Classical Ballet of Miami it is…a way of dancing and interpreting traditional repertory that has no equal”. Orlando Taquechel, El Nuevo Herald. Led by exiled Cubans, Artistic Director Pedro Pablo Peña, Founder and Director of the International Ballet Festival of Miami (www.intballetfest.org) and Ballet Mistress/Director Magaly Suarez, internationally known teacher and coach, this new company is solely dedicated to performing and preserving the classical ballet repertoire as exemplified by the legendary Cuban ballet tradition. Famous for its artistic virtuosity and technical brilliance, the Cuban Ballet School has trained some of the most well known dancers of today and the late 20th Century, and has created a technique that is unmatched in modern day classical ballet. Today, many of the most gifted practitioners of this style are living in exile, distanced from the origins of the most important classical ballet style to have developed in the Americas. The Cuban Classical Ballet of Miami 2007 showcased a stellar cast as featured in the TIME Magazine article “Psst! The Cubans Are Coming! Latin Ballet Dancers are storming the stage creating a revolution of Russian proportions.” For the first time together, Lorena Fiejoo, Alihaydee Carreño and other international guests performed Giselle, one of the best loved ballets of all time, with full orchestra conducted by another Cuban in exile, Maestro Jose Urbay; it was a brilliant moment in Ballet. A second program of famous pas de deux from the classical repertoire lit up the stage with the incomparable artistry, explosive prowess and dazzling technique of the Cuban Classical Principal dancers. The Miami Herald wrote of the company “The Greatest Moments of the Dance” and Diario Las Americas said “….the best Giselle ever seen in Miami”. The 2008 Season, Program I, premiered one of the greatest ballets, Swan Lake, accompanied by an orchestra of 56 musicians conducted by Maestro Urbay, beautiful costumes and magnificent scenery starring Cuban Prima Ballerinas Adiarys Almeida and Hayna Gutierrez, Taras Domitro and Miguel Angel Blanco. “. . . this Swan Lake had more life than the lavis but turbid production that the American Ballet Theater brought us last winter.” – Jordan Levin, The Miami Herald (Monday, Feb. 25, 2008). Programs II & III, “The Best of the Classical Repertoire”, again hosted Cuban Principal Ballet Stars currently dancing in the best ballet companies in the US and abroad. Season 2009 brought not one, but two premieres, both never seen before in South Florida. The full length ballet “Le Corsaire” with breathtaking costumes & scenery and a stellar cast. Cubans Prima Ballerina Lorena Feijoo and Principal Dancers Hayna Gutierrez & Miguel Angel Blanco, with International Guest Principals Shoko Nakamura- Staatsballet Berlin, Wieslaw Dudek- Slovene National Ballet and Vitor Luiz- Teatro Municipal de Rio de Janiero, Brazil, brought down the house. The second premiere of famous Cuban choreographer Alberto Alonso’s “Carmen” was a critical success with powerful performances by the incomparable Lorena Feijoo, Hayna Gutierrez, Miguel Angel Blanco and Vitor Luiz. The company is growing by leaps and bounds, attracting awe struck audiences wherever and whenever they perform. We look forward to bringing our audiences here in South Florida, and elsewhere on our tours, many more successful seasons of the Cuban Classical Ballet of Miami.
